The 29-year-old was informed of the decision by Capello during a brief meeting at Wembley on Friday afternoon. The decision comes after allegations surrounding the Chelsea skipper's private life came to light.

"After much thought I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," said the Italian in a statement

Capello made it clear that while Terry's conduct on the field had been exactly what he wanted when he made his decision to appoint the central defender as skipper in August 2008, recent headlines about his personal life left him with little choice other than to remove the honour from the Barking-born player. It is alleged that Terry had an affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the ex-girlfriend of England team-mate Wayne Bridge, also a former club-mate of Terry's at Chelsea.

"As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour," added Capello.

"However, I have to take into account other conside ... Read more »

Ryan Giggs believes Wayne Rooney is edging closer to the select group of players currently regarded the best in the world.

The 24-year-old Manchester United team-mate has just completed a memorable week, which began with his first four-goal haul in the victory over Hull.

Rooney then headed home the injury-time goal that secured another Wembley appearance for the Red Devils at the expense of Manchester City in the Carling Cup, before finally finishing off a sensational second goal in United's demolition of title rivals Arsenal at the weekend.

And Giggs believes Rooney's form could soon earn him the kind of recognition currently enjoyed by Lionel Messi, Kaka and former Old Trafford team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, the three men widely acknowledged to be the best on the planet.

"He is getting nearer that group," said the veteran Welshman. "You have seen it for England and for us on the bigger stages. That is what all the top players do.

"The best thing is that Wayne is sti ... Read more »

Mohammad Yousuf has insisted he will stay on as captain despite Pakistan's staggeringly unsuccessful tour of Australia. The PCB chairman had earlier called for a change in captaincy following the conclusion of the tour, but Yousuf maintained the results in Australia didn't warrant him stepping down from his post. Pakistan's chief of selectors, Iqbal Qasim, offered his resignation in the immediate aftermath of Pakistan's 5-0 loss in the ODIs, but Yousuf wasn't willing to follow suit

Floyd Mayweather's bout with Shane Mosley is set to go ahead on May 1 after the six-time world champion signed the contract.

In a statement released by Swanson Communications, Mayweather confirmed he would take on Mosley at Las Vegas' MGM Grand.

With Mosley already having signed the papers, Mayweather's signature was the final piece in the jigsaw.

The 32-year-old welterweight said: "This one is definitely for the fans as I wasn't going to waste anyone's time with a meaningless tune-up bout and asked to fight Shane immediately.

"I have said ever since I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is one of the best, but come May 1, he still won't be great enough to beat me.

Mosley was delighted to have the final details confirmed and predicted he would have little trouble inflicting the first defeat of Mayweather's career.

"I have always wanted to fight Floyd and now it is finally coming true," he said.

"I am already in great sh ... Read more »

Shoaib Malik, a former Pakistan captain, will lead the team again in the Twenty20 international against Australia in Melbourne on February 5 after Shahid Afridi, the regular limited-overs captain, was banned for two matches because of a ball-tampering incident during the fifth ODI in Perth.

Malik will be the third captain on this tour, after Mohammad Yousuf and Afridi. Yousuf, the team's Test captain, is not part of the Twenty20 squad, while Younis Khan, who was recently replaced by Yousuf, had retired from the format following the World Twenty20 victory in 2009. Kamran Akmal, the squad's vice-captain, was overlooked after he was dropped for the final ODI of the series.

Malik has led the Pakistan team in the past, in all three formats. He was first appointed as the captain in May 2007, after Pakistan's disastrous World Cup campaign under Inzamam-ul-Haq. He had been at the helm for three Tests and 36 ODIs, before handing over the reins to Younis Khan in early 2009. Malik met wit ... Read more »
